Ari Klein's Fleece Hats Page

After making fleece hats from various designs this modifcation is easy, warm, and looks good. (CLICK HERE IF YOU WOULD RATHER MAKE A GAITER)

Step 1: Cut a rectangular piece of fabric. 26" (along the tape in the picture, but 2" more than the circumference of the head you are fitting. I use 25" for adults and 22" for children and it seems to fit many people. The stretchy side of the fabric should be the width in the picture.
Step 2: Fold up the bottom of the fabric to about 16" and sew across.
Step 3: Fold length-wiseand, wrong-side out. Sew starting 3 inches from the end and stop 3 inches before the other end.
Step 4: Cut 1/2 inch in where you started sewing the doubled end.
Step 5: Turn rightside out, sew doubled portion of the last 3 inches. Cut off the excess material up to the cut from Step 4.
Step 5: Turn the doubled part into a brim. Cut parallel strips along single edge. Tie with a thin strip of lefover material.

Try a two color hat! Just start by sewing together a 17 inch and 10 inch long fleece together. When you sew these together you end up with one piece about 26 inches long. Then start at Step 1:
