The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District, like public schools across the nation, have been deeply affected by the adoption of federal and state policies that have made testing, accountability and privatization the key levers for affecting school quality.
In order to raise awareness of the impact of these policies several community groups convened by the Cleveland Heights Teachers Union joined together in the fall of the 2013-14 school year to sponsor a community discussion of education policy. The discussion focused on Reign of Error, The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools, the 2013 book by education historian Diane Ravitch.
Sponsors for the book group were Future Heights, Reaching Heights, Heights Libraries, School Ambassadors, Heights Community Congress, the administration of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school district, and the CH-UH PTA Council. More than 130 community members and educators participated in at least one of the three evenings discussing sections of the book. At the completion of the series a core group of participants formed the Heights Coalition for Public Education to continue to raise awareness of the consequences of these policies and to promote changes that will better serve children, and keep public education strong.
The Heights Coalition for Public Education is an all-volunteer group of concerned community members. Please consider joining us by attending our events, endorsing our position statement, and standing up for our public schools.
