Our Concerns

Ohio lawmakers have abandoned the civic vision of our founders and have put public education at risk. Their chronic disinvestment in this essential public institution has escalated to abandoning the common good.

Anti-public education activists have used a carefully developed narrative of failure reinforced by the misuse of standardized testing, to undermine the reputation of a cherished community institution and pillar of democracy. Their policies strangle creativity and teacher autonomy, undermine trust, and misshape education to focus on test scores rather than human development.

By prioritizing private, mostly religious education in violation of religious freedom this movement has fostered an ethos of division. Concern for your personal rights and those like you, has replaced shared responsibility for all.

These priorities have shaken our system to its core, putting its stability in jeopardy. It has deprived children of the education that is essential to a free society which nurtures and values every person.

Who We Are

We are parents, teachers and members of the Cleveland Heights–University Heights community who are dedicated to a system of public schools that provides all children an education that gives them the opportunity to succeed in life.

We believe in our schools, our teachers, our families and our students.

State mandated tests are not legitimate measures of the quality of education students experience or our community values. We advocate for the end of state and federal policies that are harming children and public education.

Our Position

We call on Congress and the Ohio Legislature to end their war on public education and regain a responsible approach to education in a democracy:

  • Fulfill their constitutional obligation to provide adequate and equitably distributed funds for a thorough education for all children.
  • Stop transferring public school funds to private and religious education.  End vouchers and charter schools.
  • Value, trust, and invest in the development of teachers as respected and effective professionals.
  • Reject high-stakes testing, which is an invalid use of standardized tests to judge, label and punish children, teachers, schools, and communities.
  • Embrace locally-developed assessments of student learning that inform instruction, support a broad curriculum, and encourage creative and higher level thinking.
