First Class Requirements

Camping

  1. Since joining, have participated in ten separate troop/patrol activities (other than meetings), three of which include campouts since becoming second class.

Citizenship

  1. Visit and discuss with a selected individual approved by an adult troop leader ( elected official, judge, attorney, civil servant, principal, teacher) your constitutional rights and obligations as a U.S. citizen.

Cooking

  1. Help develop a patrol menu for a campout. Tell how the menu includes the basic food groups and meets nutritional needs.
  2. Using the menu you developed make a food list showing the ingredients and quantities needed for the patrol and their costs. After securing the ingredients show that you stayed in budget.
  3. Make a list of the equipment that you will need for the menu you have made.
  4. Serve as a patrol cook at camp for the menu that you helped plan. Supervise your assistants in fire building or in lighting a stove as well as in preparing the meals
  5. Explain the procedures to follow in the safe-handling and storage of fresh meats, dairy products, eggs, vegetables, and other perishable foods. Tell how to properly dispose of every sort of camp food garbage as well as dishwater.

First Aid/Safety

  1. Demonstrate bandages for injuries on the head, the upper arm, collarbone, and for a sprained ankle.
  2. Tell the five most common signs of a heart attack. Explain the steps (procedures) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  3. Show how to transport by yourself, and with one other person, a person: from a smoke-filled room with a sprained ankle, for at least 25 yards
  4. Tell what precautions must be taken for a safe trip afloat.

Fitness

  1. Successfully pass the BSA Swimmer test.**
  2. Demonstrate the clothes flotation requirement from swimming merit badge.**

Hiking

  1. Demonstrate how to find directions during the day and night without a compass.

Hiking

  1. Using a compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least 1 mile and has at least 6 points Measure the height and width of designated items.(tree, tower, ditch, etc.)

Nature

  1. Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of native plants found in your community.

Scoutcraft

  1. Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clover hitch. Join two or more poles together using the square, shear, and diagonal lashings.
  2. Use lashings to make a useful camp gadget.
  3. Demonstrate tying and use the bowline (rescue knot) and the sheetbend. Describe several ways to use a bowline.

Scoutmaster Conference

Participate in a Scoutmaster Conference where, as part of the discussion, be prepared to talk about your level of "Scout Spirit" as exemplified by your attitude and level of participation in Troop and Patrol activities. Be further prepared to discuss your leadership skills.

Complete a Board of Review

** may be waived by the troop committee for medical or safety reasons
