WAYS TO RECONNECT WITH OUR SCHOOLS:

Passive:

Sign up for the e-mail listserv for non-parents who want to stay in the loop. Subscribe by sending an e-mail to hh-request@ptc.chuh.org, and in the subject line simply put "subscribe". Go to http://ptc.chuh.org/email for the complete listserv subscription options.

A little more effort:

Pick up a copy of The Black & Gold, the Heights High newspaper. Copies can be found at the libraries and in restaurants and stores around town. It's actually a good newspaper!

Attend a school event - perhaps a concert or a play, or maybe a sporting event. Football season is just around the corner, and the basketball team has gone to State Finals 5 of the past 10 years!

Attend a School Board Meeting (and then attend another one.) They meet every 2nd and 4th Monday, 7:00 p.m., in the Board of Education Building. The Board does have an impact on the schools, and two of the five positions will be up for re-election this Fall. Be informed voters.

Making a commitment:

Volunteer your time and talent! Reaching Heights (932-5110) would welcome volunteers to work on their wonderful newsletters from each of the elementary schools - as writers or to help with distribution (delivering them to the homes on your block.) They also hold the annual Spelling Bee and other special events. Executive Director Susie Kaeser has been a long-time volunteer in Boulevard Elementary and would be happy to talk to you about being a classroom volunteer.

Heights Community Congress (321-6775) is leading the community discussions around the Small Schools Initiative at the High School, and is looking to develop volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the schools. Give Martha Goble a call to learn how you can help out.

The Heights Arts Collaborative (371-3344), under the leadership of Peggy Spaeth, works with the schools to provide artists (visual, performing and literary) to help with the Coventry SmArt Day in May, and to participate in Career Day at various schools. She also needs volunteers to help infuse the schools with the arts - in other words, anyone who wants to volunteer for the arts in the schools should give Peggy a call.
